Deep beneath the Baptistery of Aachen Cathedral, a
unique window into the past reveals millenary archaeological findings, brought
vividly to life through an impressive audiovisual presentation and enhanced by
Griven Essentials luminaires.
Within the archaeological excavation of Aachen
Cathedral’s Baptistery, illuminated stations and an accompanying audio guide
lead visitors on a captivating journey through time — from Roman traces and
Carolingian architecture to the artistic legacy of the Romanesque, Gothic, and
Baroque periods.
The project was initiated by Dr. Jan Richarz, German
architectural historian and Master Builder of Aachen Cathedral, whose expertise
and passion for historic architecture have made possible this fusion of
research, architecture, and modern presentation.
Thoughtfully designed lighting creates evocative
scenes of light and shadow, revealing layers of soil, masonry, stones, and sacred
relics from centuries gone by. Combined with the storytelling elements of the
audio guide, this interplay produces an atmospheric experience that doesn’t
just narrate history — it makes it come alive.
To allow flexible responses to new archaeological
discoveries, the selected luminaires and cables have been equipped with a
special magnetic mounting system. This enables the positions of the lights to
be easily adjusted as excavations evolve — a concept that seamlessly unites
scientific precision with artistic design.
Our German partner, LightLife Gesellschaft mbH,
chose the versatile fixtures of the GRIVEN ESSENTIALS range to discreetly
illuminate the historic remains of the baptistery. Fifteen units of Moon Wall
in a dynamic white colour configuration with medium optics have been fixed to
the walls of the archaeological site using dedicated fixing plates fitted with
a side cable for easier installation. These high-performance luminaires enhance
the site with efficiency, despite their minimal size, and timeless elegance.
