Rising above the Adriatic shoreline, the ancient city walls of Krk stand as one of the most remarkable and best-preserved fortified systems along the Croatian coast. Encircling the historic old town almost in its entirety, both on the landward and seaward sides, these imposing stone ramparts have protected the city and shaped its identity for more than two millennia.
Layered with centuries of history, the walls bear witness to the succession of cultures, conflicts, and architectural transformations that have marked the evolution of Krk—from their earliest pre-Roman origins in the 4th or 3rd century BC to the medieval reinforcements introduced with the advent of firearms. More than a defensive structure, the walls defined the rhythm and organisation of urban life through their gates, streets, and towers, becoming an enduring symbol of resilience and continuity.

Today, as one of the largest surviving fortification systems in Croatia, the city walls of Krk continue to dominate the urban landscape with timeless authority, preserving the memory of a city that has continuously adapted while remaining deeply rooted in its past.
A soft warm-white illumination with delicate wall grazing effects was required to enhance the visual identity of the city walls while renewing their nocturnal appearance through an advanced LED lighting system. Griven’s Parade LB linear modules were identified as the ideal solution to achieve the desired concept with a discreet and non-intrusive visual presence.
A total of 59 units of a custom version of PARADE L2 B in 2700K with elliptical optics were installed along the perimeter of the east-side walls on dedicated mounting brackets. With a height of 26 mm, these supports ensure precise aiming while maintaining a safe distance from the ground and preserving the visual integrity of the historic structure. These IP67-rated DALI/ON-OFF fixtures, equipped with an integrated power supply unit, are controlled via DALI protocol, ensuring reliable operation, simplified management, and seamless integration into the overall lighting system. Furthermore, due to the site’s close proximity to the sea, the luminaires were treated with a dedicated anti-saline coating to guarantee maximum durability and long-term reliability in a highly corrosive marine environment.
Through a careful balance between technology and heritage, light becomes a subtle narrative tool, revealing the timeless beauty of the walls while strengthening the emotional bond between the city and its history, after sunset.
